Speak to the People

Plus One English - Block 5 Chapter 1 - The Rich Tradition of Indian Classical Dance

In Bock 5 of Plus One English Course Book students have to study various dance forms in India. Ms. Sree Rekha R. has prepared a useful presentation with lots of photos to understand them in detail.
The slides are self explanatory and deal with the different aspects of Indian dance forms. The presentation helps us to realize that the infusion of ICT can transform our dreary language classes to an interactive one.

ICT - A Tool for Teaching English Poems

A good poem is a piece of art in which the imagination and the personal taste of the poet dominate. The aim of teaching poetry is, primarily, to enable learners to develop the skill of enjoyment and appreciation. The present system of teaching poems, followed by language teachers, hardly helps to realize the ultimate aim of teaching /learning poetry. Second language teachers, usually consider it as a daunting task and many students display hostility to poetry- a sense that it is difficult or ‘alien’ dominates in them.

But the fact is that poetry remains as an inescapable part of language teaching. The main reason for poetry classes being uninteresting in the second language situation is that the teacher does not take into consideration the linguistic, cultural and psychological barriers which stand in the way of a proper appreciation of poetry. Contrary to the common belief that teaching of English poems is an uninteresting task, it can be really fun, interactive, and stimulating through contextualized activities, supported by very sophisticated audio- visual software and other creative resources. A careful integration of ICT into English Language Teaching (ELT) can certainly enhance the quality of language teaching, especially of poems. A move in this regard will help to overcome many of the existing barriers in the teaching/learning of English language. An attempt to infuse ICT is made here. The poem selected for the purpose is Winter Evening Settles Down by T.S. Eliot.

Std. 6 English Unit I and II

The regular visitors of English Blog may not need an introduction toMs.Parvathy Venkiteswaran. TheRevision Test Series (two tests for each units of the Std. X English Text - Click here to download) thatshe sent us last year was a beautiful and very useful work. Her details were not known then and recently she revealed herself as an HSA English at Samooham High School, North Paravur who retired last March. A conversation over the phone made it clear that she retired only from the government service and not from language teaching. She writes for Mathrubhumi Daily, Mathrubhumi Successline, many private publishers all over Kerala and has been in the translation team of ICT text books.
Her first contribution this year are some slide presentations for the U.P. classes.

Dhanush and his pets

Dhanush and his pets

Dhanush has two hens. He has three goats and a cow too. Hens lay eggs everyday. Goats have six kids. Cow gives eight bottles of milk daily. Dhanush loves them very much. He gives lots of food to the hens, goats and the cow. He keeps them clean. He plays with them during holidays.

Now let us learn a simple song to understand the usage of "give and let'

Give me, let me…

Give me a car, let me drive
Give me a dress, let me wear.
Give me a pen, let me write
Give me a flower, let me smell.

Give me a plate, let me eat
Give me a cup, let me drink.

Give me a bike, let me ride
Give me a bed, let me sleep.

English Blog is back

Dear all,
English Blog was not active for some time as my mother was infected by Dengue Virus. She has been bed ridden since May 6th till now. Even after being admitted in the hospital for 10 days she hasn't recovered much. Am sharing this with you so that you people be alert of this deadly virus. Some say it has undergone mutation and has become worse than ever.

Guys please keep yourself safe from mosquitoes.

By the way even after the previous request none has come up with any study materials. Please prepare some and send it to rajeevjosephkk@gmail.com so that it gets published as early as possible.
